Who can participate in EMAS?
EMAS is open to all companies and institutions, public and private sector. Participation in the EMAS system is voluntary. Companies that have an EMAS system are not necessarily ISO 14001 certified
What is the difference between EMAS and ISO 14001?
Both ISO 14001 and EMAS are based on the same conditions. The implementation of an environmental management system based on ISO 14001 can be considered as a step towards EMAS registration.
The main difference between EMAS and ISO 14001 is limited to the obligation for the company to publish a statement on the environmental aspects it has identified.
How to get EMAS registration?
An organization that joins the scheme must commit to:
- to implement and maintain an environmental management system
- to perform periodic audits
- to publish information in the form of an environmental declaration
After verification and approval of the environmental statement by an independent accredited organization, the company applies for registration, where after checking the completeness and accuracy of the documents provided for entry in the register of organizations. The information is then sent to the Minister of the Environment for entry into a central register and into the EU EMAS register maintained by the European Commission.
The registered organization is entitled to use the EMAS logo. Guidelines for the use of the EMAS logo are included in Annex III to the Guidelines for the EMAS Regulation.
EMAS is an EU instrument introduced by Regulation No. 761/2001 of the European Parliament and of the Council of March 19, 2001.
