CBAM: A Regulatory Obligation for Exporters to the EU

CBAM: a regulatory obligation for exporters to the EU

Companies exporting to the EU market, particularly in the sectors covered by CBAM (metals, cement, aluminium, fertilisers, energy), are already facing a new set of requirements that are no longer optional but mandatory in order to maintain access to the European market.

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a mechanism introduced by the European Union with the aim of establishing an equal "carbon price" between domestic EU producers and companies from third countries. In this way, the EU seeks to prevent so-called carbon leakage and to encourage a global reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Key obligations for companies:

  • Precise and documented calculation of CO₂ emissions at product level
  • Establishment of a system for monitoring, measuring and verifying emissions
  • Regular reporting to the relevant EU bodies within the transition period
  • Preparation for financial obligations from 2026, when the mechanism enters into full application

During the transition period (2023–2025), companies have a reporting obligation, without direct financial charges. Nevertheless, this period should be used for full preparation, because from 2026 CBAM will also mean real costs associated with emissions.

What does this mean in practice?

CBAM is not merely another regulatory obligation, but a structural change in the way the price of products is calculated when exporting to the EU. Companies that fail to establish appropriate emissions management systems will face:additional financial burdens

  • administrative barriers
  • potential loss of competitiveness
  • limited or impeded access to the EU market

Strategic aspect

Timely alignment with CBAM should be seen as a strategic investment, not merely as a cost. Companies that establish effective carbon footprint management systems will have:

  • a better position on the EU market
  • increased trust among partners
  • readiness for future ESG and climate regulations

Conclusion:

CBAM redefines the way companies from the region will approach exports to the EU. Compliance is no longer a choice – it is a precondition for continuity and growth on international markets.
