Promoting Sustainable Palm Oil: The Role of RSPO Certification

Palm oil is found in a wide range of everyday food products, making its sustainable production an issue of growing environmental and social concern. Ensuring that this widely used ingredient is produced responsibly is essential for protecting ecosystems, improving livelihoods and meeting global sustainability goals.

To support this mission, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was founded in 2004. Its goal is to advance the use of sustainably produced palm oil by setting strict environmental and social standards and by encouraging cooperation between all stakeholders involved – from producers and processors to retailers and NGOs.

The RSPO standard emphasizes several key principles, including implementing environmentally sound agricultural practices, protecting biodiversity, and ensuring fair and safe working conditions. Throughout the supply chain, RSPO-certified palm oil can be traced back to certified plantations, ensuring that sustainability commitments are met at every stage.

TÜV NORD is one of the certification bodies authorized to conduct RSPO audits and verify compliance with the standard. Companies involved in the production, processing or distribution of palm oil can obtain RSPO certification through a transparent and rigorous assessment process.
